This dinoflagellate was captured in the Intracoastal Waterway of the Atlantic Ocean, on May 15, 2009. Protoperidinium is a dinoflagellate monitored among toxic algae blooms by NOAA's Phytoplankton Monitoring Network. Original avi compressed video (10,982 k).

This dinoflaggelate has inside shrinking body matter. Likely in the process of dying or death. Perhaps evaporation or some other natural cause.

It appears the pink inner body of this dinoflagellate Protoperidinium has somehow literally moved itself, outside of the cell wall.What am I looking at exactly?--I don't think that can be deduced from this picture - I'm not sure the two are associated.It appears that the protoperidinium is dead (not moving) and just stuck to the round object.It's a mystery! :)Thanks,Allison-- Allison Sill, JHT
